Managing Editor — Brut India

Role Overview

The Managing Editor will lead Brut India’s editorial vision, newsroom operations and content strategy. This role requires a sharp news instinct, strong leadership and a deep understanding of digital-first storytelling.

You will oversee daily editorial output, guide the newsroom team, ensure quality and accuracy and drive impactful journalism that resonates across platforms.

Key Responsibilities

Editorial Leadership

  • Define and execute the editorial vision aligned with Brut’s global values and local relevance

  • Lead daily editorial meetings and shape news priorities

  • Ensure accuracy, fairness and high journalistic standards

Newsroom Management

  • Manage editors, reporters, producers and freelance contributors

  • Build an inclusive, collaborative, high-performance newsroom culture

  • Mentor team members and support professional growth

Content Strategy & Audience Growth

  • Develop platform-specific strategies for Instagram, YouTube and emerging platforms

  • Use analytics and audience insights to optimize reach and engagement

  • Drive innovative storytelling formats and video-first narratives

Story Development

  • Identify impactful, original stories across politics, social change, culture, and youth issues

  • Oversee scripting, editing and publishing workflows

  • Ensure strong headlines, storytelling clarity and visual impact

Cross-functional Collaboration

  • Work with production, social media, partnerships and sales teams

  • Maintain editorial independence while supporting collaborations that align with Brut’s values

Standards & Compliance

  • Uphold ethical journalism practices and fact-checking protocols

  • Ensure legal compliance and risk assessment on sensitive stories

Qualifications

  • 10–12+ years in journalism or digital media

  • Proven leadership experience in a newsroom environment

  • Strong understanding of video-first and mobile-first storytelling

  • Deep knowledge of Indian socio-political landscape and youth culture

  • Experience with digital analytics and platform optimization

  • Exceptional editing, writing, and storytelling skills

Preferred Attributes

  • Experience in multilingual content strategy

  • Strong network across media, civil society, and culture sectors

  • Ability to handle breaking news and high-pressure situations
